1. General Conduct and preparation
● Always respect coaches, players, and other users of the nets. Follow instructions from coaches or other supervisors at training sessions.
● No horseplay (e.g., throwing balls around, shouting, or running behind nets).
● Players and coaches must be on alert for potential safety issues at all times.
● Do not use nets in wet, slippery, or stormy conditions.
● If the surface is uneven or damaged, report it and avoid using that lane.
● Warm-ups and any preparation for training should be undertaken off to the side of the net area, well away from any area that would be “exposed” to the danger of being hit by a ball.
2. Exposure to being hit by a ball
You are “exposed” to being hit by a ball if a direct, unobstructed line can be drawn between you and a batter or bowler.
● While inside the net, you are exposed if a ball is active (e.g. if you have bowled or another bowler is bowling).
● While outside your net, you may be exposed to balls coming from other nets.
● Be aware of potential ricochets off hard surfaces in the area.
While “exposed” you must face the batter or bowler at all times. All participants must be on the lookout for participants who may be a risk and ensure they are acting in a safe manner.
3. Protective Equipment whilst training
● Batters must wear:
o Helmet with faceguard
o Pads, gloves, thigh guard, box, and chest guard (optional but recommended)
● Keepers in the nets must wear full protective gear.
● Batters should pad up well outside of the net area.
3. Net Setup and Inspection
● Check that netting, poles, and surfaces are in good condition before use.
● Ensure net curtains are fully drawn and secured to contain balls.
● No loose objects (e.g., bags, bottles, litter) inside the playing area.
● Make sure adequate lighting is available if training in the evening.
4. Bowling and Batting Safety
● As a batter or a bowler, never turn your back to an incoming ball.
● Bowlers must wait until the lane is clear before starting a run-up. Bowlers should check behind them before starting a run-up.
● After bowling a ball, bowlers must leave the net area, ready for the next bowler.
● Batters must be ready before a ball is bowled — no surprise deliveries.
● After batting, don’t walk across another lane. Exit by walking past the bowlers and behind where they start their run-ups.
● Retrieve balls only when safe to do so. If a ball goes into another net, alert the other batter when there is no activity in their net.
5. Spectators and Coaches
● Spectators, coaches, and waiting players must stand well clear of the nets.
● Coaches should position themselves outside the netting when possible.
6. Emergency Procedures
● Know the location of the first aid kit and emergency contacts.
● Report all injuries or near misses to a coach or facility supervisor immediately.
7. After Training
● Collect all equipment and ensure the area is tidy.
● Report any damage to nets or equipment before the next session.
